Karin has lived abroad in a "diplomatic" context from a very early age. Born in Belgium, she has resided in many countries including the US, Canada, and various European and Latin American countries. So in a way, Karin's interest in cross-cultural issues and multicultural experience started long before she made it part of her profession. She has been a mental health professional for more than 15 years, specializing in family and couples therapy, with a strong emphasis on multicultural, identity, and gender related issues. Karin earned her BA from Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada), her MA from USIU (San Diego, California), a postgraduate degree in Systemic Psychotherapy from the Universidad de Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and her PhD in Psychology from the Universidad del Salvador (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Karin began as a fervent "systemic practitioner", and has now moved on to incorporate narrative and social constructionist ideas, precisely because they take into account diversity, transculturalism, and gender. She also has experience in working with expatriates and their families, a project which came about as a result of her awareness of the fact that the insertion into a new culture can be considered one of the most stressful episodes in life. Karin is fluent in a number of languages including English, Spanish, and Dutch, among others. |
